The Binnensalzstelle am Kaliwerk Ronnenberg is an intriguing site. It’s a former salt deposit located on the remnants of a spoil heap from the Ronnenberg potash mine. This isn’t your typical nature reserve. This land bears the scars of extensive potash mining. For decades this mine was a key element in Ronnenberg’s economy. The mine operated from 1898 to 1975. Over 40 million tons of material were extracted. The resulting spoil heap was immense.
Most of the spoil heap was later removed. However a significant portion remains. Rainwater flowing from this leftover spoil heap dissolves salts. The resulting saturated brine is collected in ditches. Mostly sulfate salts precipitate out here. The brine is then diluted with fresh water. Finally this diluted brine is transported via an 8 kilometer long pipe to the Fösse river. This process introduces around 20 tons of salt into the river annually.
This isn’t just any pile of waste rock. The Binnensalzstelle is a designated FFH area. This means it’s protected under the EU Habitats Directive. The area is relatively narrow and stretches over 600 meters. It covers a total of 1.47 hectares. Access to the entire area is prohibited by the Clausthal Mining Authority. It’s a fragile ecosystem a unique habitat formed from the byproducts of industrial activity.
The Binnensalzstelle is one of only two remaining FFH areas in Ronnenberg. Its existence is a powerful reminder of the complex relationship between human industry and the natural environment. It’s a place where the ghosts of mining operations still linger. It’s also where nature finds a way to flourish even in the most unlikely of places.
