Gambling. It’s the lifeblood of Las Vegas. And nowhere is that more evident than here, at Binion’s Gambling Hall and Hotel. Binion’s. It’s a name synonymous with high-stakes action, old-school Vegas charm, and a history as colorful as the million-dollar display that once graced its casino floor. Benny Binion, a Texas gambler with a checkered past, arrived in Vegas in the late 1940s, a time when the city was still finding its footing as the entertainment capital of the world. He bought the Eldorado Club and Hotel Apache in 1951, transforming them into Binion’s Horseshoe, a casino that quickly became a legend. Binion’s wasn’t just another casino. It was the first in downtown Las Vegas to offer plush carpeting underfoot, replacing the traditional sawdust. It offered complimentary services to every gambler, not just the high rollers. And, most importantly, it boasted incredibly high table limits. Imagine a time when the standard craps limit was a mere $50. Binion’s blew that out of the water with a $500 limit, ten times the norm. That audacious move cemented Binion’s reputation as the place for serious gamblers. Binion’s legacy extends beyond high-stakes gambling. His son, Jack, launched the World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe in 1970. This event, initially a small gathering of poker enthusiasts, grew into the largest poker tournament in the world, forever linked to the Binion name. The million-dollar display, a mountain of cash encased in glass, became an iconic symbol of Binion’s opulence and a must-see attraction for visitors. The display was originally composed of $10,000 bills. Later versions consisted of a mix of $100, $20, and $1 bills. That image alone embodies the spirit of Binion’s: bold, brash, and undeniably Vegas. While the main hotel closed in 2009, part of it reopened in 2019 as the Hotel Apache. It pays homage to the original Hotel Apache. It features vintage-style furnishings, a nod to the casino’s storied past. So, as you stand before Binion’s, remember. You’re standing on the ground where Vegas legends were made. You are at the site of high-stakes gambles, where fortunes were won and lost. And you are in a place where the spirit of the Wild West met the glitz and glamour of the Entertainment Capital.
