In 1923, Los Angeles welcomed a newcomer. It was the Biltmore Los Angeles Hotel, a beacon of luxury and ambition. The Biltmore Tower quickly became a symbol of the city’s rise to prominence. Over 3,000 people attended the grand opening, eager to witness the dawn of a new era. The Biltmore Tower was designed to outshine all other hotels in Los Angeles. The architects, Schultze & Weaver, also designed New York City’s iconic Waldorf Astoria and Park Lane Hotels. The founders spared no expense, equipping each room with radio hookups, a cutting-edge amenity in 1921.

The Biltmore Tower wasn’t just a hotel. It was a cultural hub. It hosted the Academy Awards, witnessed the birth of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and played a key role in the 1960 Democratic National Convention. The hotel’s opulence attracted Hollywood’s elite. Celebrities like Walt Disney, Katherine Hepburn, Mae West, and Carmen Miranda graced its halls. Even notorious figures like Al Capone and Bugsy Siegel were drawn to the Biltmore’s allure.

The Biltmore Tower’s history is filled with intriguing anecdotes. The Galleria Reale, a 350-foot hallway, became a prime spot for stargazing. So many people lingered there, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities, that the hotel had to employ a staff member. This staffer’s sole job was to politely inform those who overstayed their welcome. The Italian artist Giovanni Smeraldi, who painted the Biltmore Tower’s frescoes and murals, was so enamored with his work that he wished to have his ashes interred in the lobby fountain. His murals, reminiscent of those in the Vatican and the White House, added a touch of old-world charm to the Biltmore Tower.

During Prohibition, the Gold Room transformed into a clandestine nightclub, run by the enigmatic Baron Long. A small window above the mirrored French doors allowed paparazzi to capture candid shots of the revelers below. The Gold Room is the only ballroom with a gate, a testament to its exclusive nature. The Biltmore Tower’s elegance extended to its ornate pool, a blend of Roman bath and Gilded Age ocean liner. The rich blues, greens, and golds of the tile mosaics, coupled with the surrounding wooden deck chairs, created an ambiance of pure luxury. One can only imagine the lavish parties that took place there. The Biltmore Tower stands as a testament to a bygone era of glamour and sophistication. Its walls echo with the laughter, secrets, and dreams of those who passed through its doors.
