Nestled within the sprawling Gyeongbokgung Palace complex lies Bihyeongak, the Crown Prince’s study. Bihyeongak served as a sanctuary of learning for the young royals of the Joseon Dynasty. Imagine the future Emperor Sunjong, diligently studying within these very walls during the 19th century. Gyeongbokgung, the largest of Seoul’s Five Grand Palaces, was originally built in 1395 by King Taejo. It housed the royal family and served as the seat of government. Bihyeongak, part of the Donggung (the Crown Prince’s residence), played a vital role in preparing the heir to the throne. Within Bihyeongak, the Crown Prince would delve into Confucian texts, history, and the arts of governance. The original Bihyeongak, like much of Gyeongbokgung, was tragically razed during the Japanese occupation. Thankfully, a meticulous restoration of Jaseondang and Bihyeongak was undertaken, beginning in 1999. This restoration allows us to glimpse the world where future kings were molded. The restoration efforts at Gyeongbokgung and Bihyeongak stand as testaments to Korea’s dedication to its heritage.
