Gazing out at the vast Pacific, a hulking silhouette emerges from the waves. This, my friends, is Big Rock. Big Rock isn’t just a landmark; it’s a silent sentinel, a timeless observer of Malibu’s evolution. Big Rock has witnessed the ebb and flow of civilizations, from the native Chumash who called this area home, to the arrival of Spanish explorers, and the transformation into the glamorous haven we know today.

Big Rock quietly watched in 1892 as Frederick and May Rindge acquired a vast 13,330-acre ranch. This land, encompassing much of what we now call Malibu, was later expanded to an impressive 17,000 acres. Can you imagine owning such a vast piece of paradise? Big Rock can. It saw it all unfold.

Fast forward to 1936. The legendary newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst set his sights on Big Rock, purchasing a significant portion of the area. He dreamt of building a grand estate here, a testament to his wealth and influence. But fate had other plans. In 1944, Hearst sold the lower half of his holdings to Art Jones, a local realtor who played a pivotal role in shaping the Big Rock neighborhood we see today. Jones later sold a chunk of the upper Big Rock area to Pierce Sherman, who graded many of the current streets.

Big Rock has borne witness to not only development, but also natural disasters. In 1966, the stability of the land was tested as slope failures began to occur. This eventually escalated into the Big Rock Mesa landslide, a stark reminder of the power of nature. The area rallied, forming County Improvement District 2629R and issuing bonds to fund dewatering facilities. Years later, the City of Malibu stepped in, creating Assessment District 98-1 to maintain these vital systems.

The rock even watched as, in 1977, the Big Rock Mesas Property Owners Association successfully fought against a proposed subdivision, preserving the area’s natural beauty. Tragedy struck in 1993 when a wildfire swept through Big Rock, destroying 50 homes. Big Rock stood firm, an unwavering presence amidst the devastation, a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. The rock’s name might seem simple, but its story is anything but. This unassuming rock, rising from the ocean, has seen more history than most of us could ever imagine. Big Rock stands as a silent testament to Malibu’s captivating past.
