Ever wondered about the quiet charm of Biesdorf? Nestled in the eastern suburbs of Berlin Biesdorf boasts a history stretching back to 1375. The name itself Bysterstorff or Bisterstorff appears in the land book of Charles IV. Imagine a small village surrounded by fields. This was Biesdorf before it became part of greater Berlin.

For centuries Biesdorf remained a relatively isolated municipality. It was part of the Niederbarnim district until 1920. Then came the “Greater Berlin Act”. Biesdorf’s peaceful existence was disrupted during the tumultuous years of World War II and its aftermath. Thirty-six houses were seized from officials. The first post-war mayor Arthur Werner even resided here. Parts of Biesdorf were occupied by the Red Army. A wooden wall separated these areas from the rest of the village. The Soviet forces eventually left in the 1950s.

But Biesdorf’s history is not just about war and occupation. The Biesdorf mansion once confiscated by the Soviet army became a mourning hall for fallen soldiers. It also hosted celebrations like medal ceremonies. The soldiers were initially buried in the estate park later moved to Soviet military cemeteries. Think of the stories held within those walls the echoes of both sorrow and celebration.

Biesdorf’s geography is just as fascinating. The Biesdorfer Höhe a hill rising to 82 meters above sea level. The Wuhletal park sits nearby. Several lakes including the Biesdorfer Baggersee and the Dreiecksee dot the landscape. The Wuhle river marks Biesdorf’s border with Kaulsdorf. Small parts of the famous Tierpark and Erholungspark Marzahn even belong to Biesdorf.

Today Biesdorf is well-connected. The S-Bahn and U-Bahn provide efficient transport. Stations like Biesdorf Wuhletal Biesdorf-Süd and Elsterwerdaer Platz ensure easy access to the rest of the city. The B1 and B5 federal highways also pass through Biesdorf.

This small part of Berlin has a rich past. Its story weaves together centuries of history from humble beginnings to its current status as a vibrant part of the city. From the quiet charm of its lakes and parks to the echoes of its wartime past Biesdorf is a place to explore and ponder. So take your time enjoy Biesdorf.
