Gazing over the gentle flow of the Bierbach, one can almost hear the echoes of its bustling past. This unassuming stream, nestled in the heart of Eldena, Greifswald, holds a secret history more potent than its waters suggest. The Bierbach wasn’t always just a picturesque waterway. Its name, meaning “Beer Creek,” hints at its vital role in Eldena’s brewing history. This stream, once known as the Koitenhäger Bach, provided the lifeblood for Eldena’s brewery. Imagine the monks of Eldena Abbey, centuries ago, drawing water from this very stream to craft their renowned brews. After the secularization of the abbey in 1535, the brewery continued to thrive, becoming part of the ducal estate. Even after a devastating fire in 1837, the brewery, then owned by the University of Greifswald, was rebuilt, a testament to its importance. Its eventual closure in 1932, due to competition, marked the end of an era. The Bierbach, however, continued to flow, a silent witness to Eldena’s transformation. While the brewery is gone, its legacy lives on in the name of this stream. The street name, “Am Bierbach,” further cements its place in Eldena’s story. Today, the Bierbach flows through a protected nature reserve, a haven for wildlife. It’s a peaceful scene, a far cry from the clanging of brewery equipment and the bustle of workers.
