Fancy climbing a tower steeped in history? Right before us stands the Bieberer Aussichtsturm. This isn’t just any tower. It’s a landmark with a story etched into its very stones.
The Bieberer Aussichtsturm has proudly stood since 1882. It rises 27 meters above the landscape. Its observation platform sits at a height of 24.4 meters. Imagine the views from up there.
Back in 1880, Offenbach had a beautification association. This association focused on enhancing the area. They developed walking paths and installed benches. Their ambitious project was constructing this very tower. The Bieberer Berg was chosen for its height. It was perfect for strategic surveying.
Initially, the association estimated costs at 1,500 Mark. By its opening in 1882, construction soared to 7,266 Mark. That is around 65,500 Euros today.
Now, here’s a quirky fact. The tower technically stands on Bürgel territory. It is just fifteen meters from Bieber’s boundary. Despite this, it has always been known as the Bieberer Aussichtsturm. This is likely due to its location on Bieberer Berg. It is a symbol of the Bieber district.
The tower itself is a sight. It has a square layout and sits on an artificial hill. Robinia trees surround it. Light sandstone and dark red bricks make up its walls. Rounded windows break up the structure. The platform’s parapet is intricately designed. It imitates castle architecture. Look above the entrance. You will see a keystone. It is inscribed with “Erbaut 1882” meaning built in 1882.
Step inside the Bieberer Aussichtsturm. You will see a stone block to the left. It reads “Höhe des Thurms 24 mtr von Schwelle bis Plattform”. That means “Height of the tower 24 meters from sill to platform.”
Climb 108 sandstone steps. These lead to a metal spiral staircase. Nineteen steps later, you reach a metal structure. Pass through a door. You are now on the observation platform. It is 24.4 meters high. A flagpole rises above the platform.
From the top of the Bieberer Aussichtsturm, the view is amazing. It is said that on a clear day, you can see up to 90 kilometers. Spessart, Odenwald, and Taunus mountains could be visible.
After the beautification association dissolved, the wanderers association took over. In 1943, the city of Offenbach became responsible for it. In 1954, the city leased the tower to a local citizen. Sadly, it fell into disrepair. For a long time, nobody could enter.
In 1983, local associations stepped in. The “Offenbacher 03” and the music club “Eintracht” became caretakers. They maintain the tower to this day.
Today, the Bieberer Aussichtsturm is open on Sundays and public holidays. It is a venue for local events. It represents community spirit. It offers amazing panoramic views. Next time you visit, remember its history. Remember the vision of those who built it. Enjoy the view from Offenbach’s crowning glory, the Bieberer Aussichtsturm.
