Opened in 1990, the Biblioteca Pública Municipal José Saramago wasn’t always named after the Nobel laureate. It originally bore the name Biblioteca de la Vaguada. This library stemmed from a need, a solution to a problem. The older Peñagrande Library, housed within the Rafael de León Cultural Center, struggled to serve the burgeoning Fuencarral-El Pardo district, one of Madrid’s largest. The civic center project at La Vaguada offered a solution. The new library gained much-needed space and a prime location near the La Vaguada shopping center. The Biblioteca Pública Municipal José Saramago is more than just books. Its architecture, designed in 1982 by Javier San José Marqués and Jordi Parcerisas Vázquez, features a series of interconnected arches, creating a flowing, open space. This design fosters a sense of community, linking different sections of the library seamlessly. In 2011, the library was renamed to honor the Portuguese author José Saramago, cementing its place in the literary landscape of Madrid. Inside, the Biblioteca Pública Municipal José Saramago boasts a collection of books, multimedia resources, and periodicals. It offers 204 reading stations, 17 internet access points, and a 30-seat multi-purpose room, alongside a dedicated group work area. The library also provides accessibility features, including a magnetic induction loop and assistive devices like screen readers and magnifying glasses. It’s a haven for book lovers, students, and anyone seeking knowledge. The library even provides wifi access for those who prefer to bring their own devices. It’s open Monday through Friday, offering a quiet respite from the bustling city. During the summer months, from mid-June to mid-September, the hours are slightly shorter. The Biblioteca Pública Municipal José Saramago truly embodies the spirit of learning and community. It stands as a testament to the power of literature and its ability to connect people.
