In 1995, a dream began to blossom in the heart of Villa Cornú, a neighborhood in northern Córdoba. This dream would eventually become the Biblioteca Popular Alfonsina Storni. It started with three women at the APADRO NGO Community Center. They wanted to create a project that sparked real change, not just provide assistance. Their initial focus was fostering a love of reading. The center already offered tutoring, childcare, a children’s dining hall, and medical assistance. These women added a touch of magic. Three times a week, they would ring a bell, inviting children to gather around a basket brimming with books. They would read stories aloud, followed by drawing and discussions, nurturing young minds at the Biblioteca Popular Alfonsina Storni. By 1996, their involvement expanded to include nature exploration and scavenger hunts. They organized celebrations for Children’s Day and Mother’s Day, weaving themselves into the fabric of the community. The Biblioteca Popular Alfonsina Storni found its first real home in 1997: a repurposed metal container. In 1998, the container, filled with around 400 books, became a haven for young minds. Reading workshops thrived. A lending program began, and more women from the community joined the cause. Workshops on rights for teenagers and paper crafts further enriched the offerings of the Biblioteca Popular Alfonsina Storni. A pivotal moment arrived in 1999. The Biblioteca Popular Alfonsina Storni secured a role in a project funded by the Minetti Foundation, aiming to prevent school dropout. By August 1999, the project had garnered substantial community support, its activities flourishing. The group decided to seek legal status as a “Biblioteca Popular.” This recognition came in May 2000. In March 2000, the Biblioteca Popular Alfonsina Storni opened its doors in a rented house. A simple sign announced its presence. By July, over 200 people were actively participating in the library’s activities. By November, the library was a bustling hub. An average of 20 people visited daily. The library operated 43 hours a week with a staff of seven, over 2,400 books, and an average of 19 loans per day. It offered an illustration workshop and two women’s workshops. The year 2001 brought a significant boost from the ARCOR Foundation, which funded the construction of a dedicated building for the Biblioteca Popular Alfonsina Storni. This marked a turning point, solidifying the library’s presence and setting the stage for continued growth. Today, the Biblioteca Popular Alfonsina Storni stands as a testament to the power of community and the love of learning. It boasts its own building with an auditorium, hosting a variety of cultural events. With 300 permanent members, approximately 2,500 annual users, and a collection of 15,000 books, it continues to serve as a vital resource. Approximately 25 people visit each day to read, study, or participate in one of the many workshops. From a simple basket of books to a thriving community center, the Biblioteca Popular Alfonsina Storni’s journey is a story of dedication, growth, and the transformative power of literacy.
