What secrets lie hidden within those walls? Right in front of you stands the Biblioteca Municipal Rocha Peixoto, a beacon of knowledge and culture in the heart of Póvoa de Varzim. This grand library has a rich history, dating back to 1880 when it first opened its doors as the Biblioteca Popular Camões. It was a tribute to the legendary Luís de Camões, on the 300th anniversary of his death. Over the years, the library moved several times, finally finding its current home in a striking contemporary building designed by architect Silva Garcia. The building itself is an architectural marvel. It even won a national architecture prize in 1989. But did you know that the library’s main façade has an even more interesting past? It was actually part of an ambitious project by architect Francisco de Oliveira Ferreira for the Orfeon Povoense Choral Society. Imagine that, a musical heritage now intertwined with a love for literature! This unfinished façade stood for years as a testament to the grand dream of a man named José Trocado. Finally, it was moved to its present location , becoming the face of the Biblioteca Municipal Rocha Peixoto. Today, this library is more than just a repository of books. It houses a treasure trove of knowledge including a special section called Fundo Local, dedicated to studies about Póvoa de Varzim. So, as you step inside, remember you are entering a place where history, architecture, and literature intertwine in perfect harmony.
