Opened in 2005, the Biblioteca Municipal Florbela Espanca stands as a modern marvel. It was designed by the architect Alcino Coutinho. The building’s design creates a striking visual suspension effect. The Biblioteca Municipal Florbela Espanca isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant hub of literary activity. It houses a collection of 90,000 documents. These range from classic literature to the latest scientific publications and children’s books. The library is part of the National Network of Public Libraries. It serves as the main hub for Matosinhos’ municipal library network. This network includes the Su00e3o Mamede de Infesta Annex Library and a mobile library. The mobile library brings books to various locations within the municipality. The Biblioteca Municipal Florbela Espanca also hosts the LeV – Literature on the Move festival. This festival features national and international literary figures. They participate in discussions, conferences, concerts, and exhibitions. Beyond LeV, the library holds other events. These include the Matosinhos Writers’ Meeting and the Poetry Festival. The Poetry Festival, held on December 8th, commemorates the birth and death of poet Florbela Espanca. The library also plays a role in initiatives like “Hail the Language of Camu00f5es,” which promotes the Portuguese language. The Biblioteca Municipal Florbela Espanca is more than just a repository of books. It’s a dynamic center for literary and cultural engagement in Matosinhos. It continues to inspire and connect people with the power of words.
