Nestled in the heart of Milan, the Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura (BEIC) is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring power of knowledge and a bridge between the past and the future. The BEIC isn’t just about preserving the wisdom of centuries past. It’s about fostering the creation of new knowledge, a place where the archaic meets the futuristic.

The Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura’s story began in 1996, a dream championed by the “Milano Biblioteca del 2000” Association. Writer Claudio Magris eloquently described the vision: a European library, a multimedia marvel offering free access to a combined world of books and digital media. He envisioned a powerful tool for information, education, and civic engagement, much like the successful institutions in Paris, New York, San Francisco, and Munich. In 2026, this vision will finally materialize in Milan.

Imagine standing before the BEIC. Its trapezoidal wings rise 35 meters high, a monumental structure reminiscent of the grand factories of yesteryear. Yet, the glass and metal facade evoke the modernity of a greenhouse, harmonizing with the surrounding park of the former Porta Vittoria railway yard. The building’s simple, repetitive floor plan gives it a sense of approachable ordinariness, a welcoming space for all.

Step inside the Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura. The ground floor unfolds as a vast, open civic space, designed as an un-air-conditioned outdoor area. Air-conditioned sections are interspersed throughout, creating a balance of climate and openness. The south wing houses departments dedicated to the Arts and Literature, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Technology. Ascend to the top and discover a tranquil terrace reading room.

The north wing of the Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura pulses with the energy of cultural events. Here, you’ll find a fab lab, a co-working space, a gaming room, a recording studio, and an exhibition space, complete with access to a radio station. These are spaces of creation, equipped to explore new horizons.

A bridge connects the two wings of the BEIC on the second floor, symbolizing the connection between tradition and innovation. It’s a bridge to culture, offering a visual journey through the library’s vast holdings. From this vantage point, look down through portholes to the basement storeroom. Two and a half million books reside here, tended by small robots that retrieve and distribute them throughout the library. This visible archive, a rarity in most libraries, showcases the sheer magnitude of the BEIC’s collection, accessible from the Auditorium foyer.

The Auditorium is housed within a separate pavilion, the Imaginarium, conceived as a children’s library. This vibrant red structure, built entirely of wood, exudes a warm, homey feel. Its large, flexible spaces encourage exploration and play. Beneath the Imaginarium, the 300-seat Auditorium hosts a dynamic program of shows and events. And for those late-night study sessions, a 24-hour access room ensures that the doors to knowledge are always open at the Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura.
