The Biblioteca de Geografía e Historia is an integral part of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid’s library system. The university itself has roots stretching back to Cardinal Cisneros’s founding of an institution in Alcalá de Henares. This was during the transition from the 15th to the 16th century. The library’s origins are intertwined with the university’s founding. It began with Cardinal Cisneros’s personal collection.
Over time other educational institutions enriched the library. These included the Reales Estudios de San Isidro. It was formerly the Colegio Imperial de los Jesuitas. The Real Colegio de Medicina y Cirugía de San Carlos also contributed. So did the Real Colegio de Farmacia and the Real Colegio de Veterinaria.
The 19th century saw significant expansion through donations. These were from bibliophiles writers politicians university professors and scholars. This diverse group helped create the library’s valuable historical collection.
