February 12 1952. A new church was born. In a Philadelphia home at 625 North 48th Street. This was the humble beginning of the Bible Way Baptist Church. Pastor McKinley Gaither and a handful of devoted followers answered God’s call. They established a church. The name Bible Way Baptist Church was chosen. Dr Gaither became its first pastor.
The church’s early days were marked by faith and growth. It moved to 4034 Westminster Avenue. Then to 3931 Lancaster Avenue. The congregation thrived. They even paid off the mortgage. Bible Way Baptist Church continued to expand. It purchased a larger property at 52nd and Kershaw Streets. This was a significant moment. The church’s ministry blossomed. It served the community. It spread the Gospel.
Tragedy struck on February 14 1971. Pastor Gaither’s birthday. A devastating fire destroyed the church building. The congregation was heartbroken. But their faith remained strong. Pastor Gaither famously said “We must have hit the devil too hard”. He never lost hope.
Undeterred the Bible Way Baptist Church rebuilt. A ground-breaking ceremony took place in 1971. The new building opened in 1973. The congregation marched to the new edifice. They sang “We’ve Come This Far By Faith”.
The years that followed saw further growth. The church paid off its mortgage early. Pastor Gaither retired in 1993 after 42 years of service. He passed away in 1999. Pastor Damone B Jones Sr took over.
Pastor Jones continued the legacy of growth. Many new ministries were established. This included the Outreach Kitchen and Bible Institute. The church thrived under his leadership. His wife Melissa also played a vital role. She developed Women’s ministries. She earned a Master’s degree in Christian Counseling. The Bible Way Baptist Church remains a vibrant pillar of the Philadelphia community. It stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community spirit. It’s a church that continues to impact lives and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
