Have you ever crossed a bridge named for a woman? Right before you stands the Betsy Ross Bridge. It connects Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Pennsauken, New Jersey. It was built between 1969 and 1974, and, while it was originally intended to be named the “Delair Bridge,” it opened in 1976, during the American Bicentennial Year. This was the year of its namesake, Betsy Ross’s 200th anniversary, and the bridge became a symbol of a nation’s journey toward a brighter future. Construction of the bridge was a massive engineering feat; it is a continuous steel truss bridge that spans the Delaware River. You might not know, but during construction, builders used thousands of headstones from a historic cemetery, Monument Cemetery, for the bridge’s embankments. If you look closely, you might be able to spot some of these headstones along the Delaware River. The Betsy Ross Bridge also stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of the city.
