“Fifteen million euros!” That’s what it cost to build this Betriebswerkstatt Hamburg-Tiefstack. It was newly constructed in 2013 and 2014. Today, it is used by the Nordbahn Eisenbahngesellschaft.

The Betriebswerkstatt Hamburg-Tiefstack is a crucial hub. It maintains the trains that keep Hamburg moving. Specifically, it houses 15 modern Stadler Flirt 3 electric multiple units. These ETs are vital for regional transport. Since the last timetable change, these trains operate on lines RB 61 and RB 71. They run between Hamburg-Altona and Wrist. Also, they service the route between Hamburg Hbf and Itzehoe.

Since 2022, the Betriebswerkstatt Hamburg-Tiefstack also services Stadler Kiss double-decker trains. These belong to DB Regio Schleswig-Holstein. These trains travel from Hamburg Hbf to Lübeck Hbf. They continue to Lübeck-Travemünde Strand. So, the workshop handles a variety of rolling stock.

You’ll find the Betriebswerkstatt Hamburg-Tiefstack north of the Tiefstack S-Bahn station. It connects to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof via the Berlin-Hamburger Bahn. Interestingly, signals and switches are controlled from the Tf signal box.

The heart of the facility is the vehicle hall. It has three shed tracks. Two of these are electrified. Attached is a train washing plant. An office wing connects to the vehicle hall. Outside, you’ll see additional storage tracks. There’s also a facility for servicing the trains’ toilets.

Inside the Betriebswerkstatt Hamburg-Tiefstack, different electrical systems power the operations. There is 15 kV, 16.7 Hz AC power for the trains. Standard 230 V, 50 Hz AC power is used. Three-phase AC power at 400 V, 50 Hz is also available. The workshop has its own heating system. Water and wastewater services are provided by Hamburg Wasser.

Spare parts and supplies arrive by truck. The Betriebswerkstatt Hamburg-Tiefstack has a road connection for deliveries.

The Hamburger Schnellbahn-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft mbH built the workshop. HSF leases it to Nordbahn. HSF is a subsidiary of Hochbahn. This arrangement ensures smooth operation. The Betriebswerkstatt Hamburg-Tiefstack keeps the trains running efficiently.
