Isn’t it remarkable how knowledge can blossom even in the most challenging circumstances? Here, before us, stands Bethlehem University. Bethlehem University isn’t just a center for learning. It’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Founded in 1973, this esteemed institution holds the distinction of being the first university established in the West Bank. Imagine the determination it took to open its doors just before the Yom Kippur War. The university’s roots run deep, tracing back to 1893 when the De La Salle Brothers began establishing schools in the region. Pope Paul VI’s vision further fueled its creation during his 1964 visit to the Holy Land. Today, Bethlehem University welcomes students of all faiths. It proudly stands as the only Catholic university in the Holy Land amidst a predominantly Muslim community. The university has faced its share of adversity. It endured twelve closures imposed by the Israeli military, including a particularly challenging three-year period. Yet, through it all, Bethlehem University persevered. It continues to provide quality education, fostering a spirit of learning, resilience, and hope in this historic and complex region.
