Tucked away on Pennsylvania Street, Bethlehem Temple Church of Detroit has witnessed a unique chapter in Detroit’s spiritual history. This isn’t the grand Sharey Zedek synagogue on Chicago Boulevard that later became the home of Clinton Street Greater Bethlehem Temple. Bethlehem Temple Church of Detroit holds its own distinct story. This particular Bethlehem Temple, established in 1963, owes its beginnings to Elder Willie and Evangelist Edna Jordan. It’s a branch, an offshoot, of that larger, more famous “mother church,” Clinton Street Greater Bethlehem Temple. But this “East Side” location, as it’s affectionately known, pulses with its own vibrant energy. For nearly 50 years, it has served as a beacon of faith, a “Soul-Saving Station.” Today, the legacy of faith continues under the guidance of Pastor Brenda Waller. While the grand history of Bishop Hancock and the larger Bethlehem Temple unfolds elsewhere, here on Pennsylvania Street, a more intimate story of faith and community has been written. It’s a story of dedication and resilience, echoing the spirit of its parent church but resonating with a unique rhythm and power all its own.
