Wondering where ancient history and modern life intertwine? Then listen closely. We are standing at the gateway to the Bethlehem Governorate. This place is one of the 16 Governorates of Palestine. It sits just south of Jerusalem.

Bethlehem Governorate covers a total area of around 660 square kilometers. However, Palestinians can only use about 13% of this area. Much of that is fragmented. This is due to the occupation by Israel.

Bethlehem’s story is one of faith and resilience. It is also a place of political importance. The Bethlehem Governorate is a stronghold of the Palestinian left.

In 2012, the population of Bethlehem Governorate was estimated to be 199,463. This number excludes Israeli settlers in the West Bank.

The Bethlehem Governorate includes many towns and villages. There are ten municipalities within its borders. These include Bethlehem, Beit Jala, and Beit Sahour. The Governorate also contains three refugee camps. Additionally, there are 58 rural districts.

Did you know that Bethlehem and Jerusalem have been twin cities for centuries? Sadly, the Israeli occupation has separated them. This separation includes pilgrimage routes. These routes now require crossing an Israeli checkpoint.

Entry to Jerusalem is restricted for Palestinian ID holders. They need an Israeli military permit to enter. Usually, these permits limit the hours and do not allow car driving.

Bethlehem Governorate faces economic challenges. It has the highest unemployment rate in the West Bank at 29%. Despite this, tourism is a vital part of the economy. In 2016, Palestine had about 2.3 million visitors. Many visitors stayed overnight in Palestinian hotels.

Two sites in the Bethlehem Governorate are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There is the Church of the Nativity and Star Street. The other site is Battir. It includes Wadi Makhrour.

Other important heritage sites are also in the Governorate. These sites include the Pools of King Solomon. Also, there is the Shepherds’ Field.

However, there’s a challenging aspect to life here. There are 18 illegal Israeli settlements in the Bethlehem Governorate. Over 100,000 settlers live there. These settlements surround Bethlehem. They effectively encircle it on all sides.

The Bethlehem Governorate is a complex region. It is full of history, culture, and modern-day challenges. It remains a significant place for people worldwide. It continues to strive for peace and prosperity. Bethlehem Governorate stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its people.
