Bethlehem Congregational Church

Did three churches become one? Absolutely. This is the story of Bethlehem Congregational Church. It’s a tale of unity, born from the merging of three distinct congregations. Three denominations, each with a rich history, came together to form this unique community. The first piece of this puzzle was the First Universalist Church of Williamsburg. Founded in 1845, it later became known as All Souls Universalist Church. The second piece, the Flatbush Christian Church, was formed in 1900. This Disciples of Christ congregation began in Park Slope and later relocated to Flatbush. Finally, Bethlehem Evangelical Church, founded in 1906, completes the trio. Bethlehem Evangelical Church and Flatbush Christian Church merged first, creating Bethlehem United Church. Then, in 1998, Bethlehem United Church and All Souls Universalist Church joined together. They formed the present-day Bethlehem Congregational Church, a testament to the power of unity and shared faith. A key figure in this merger was Reverend Emeritus Bill Nye. He served as pastor from 1984 to 2004. He guided the two churches towards their union. Under his leadership, Bethlehem Congregational Church found its home. Reverend Tom Martinez succeeded him in 2004. He brought with him a focus on social justice and the arts. Following Reverend Martinez, Pilar Millhollen served from 2017 to 2019. The history of Bethlehem Congregational Church isn’t just about buildings and mergers. It’s a story of people, of shared beliefs, and of a community built on the foundation of three distinct traditions.
