Bethlehem Church

In May 1879, a small group of twenty-eight people laid the foundation for what would become Bethlehem Church. They established their first place of worship on Fraser Street in the Summerhill community. Bethlehem Church thrived and expanded over the years, requiring additional land purchases in 1910. Bethlehem Church saw several pastors guide its congregation. Revs. Hall and Smith served from 1879 to 1911. Rev. Paul Scruggs led from 1912 to 1921, establishing a Senior Choir and expanding services. Rev. Thompson took over in 1922, adding a Junior Choir and morning worship. Under Rev. William Jackson’s leadership from 1935 to 1970, Bethlehem Church experienced significant growth and development. New ministries were formed, including the Jackson Chorus, Baptist Young People’s Union, and several others. Further land acquisitions in 1942 and 1949 facilitated the church’s remodeling. Bethlehem Church moved to its current location on Hogan Road in 1972. A devastating tornado struck the church just six months later, in May 1973. Remarkably, the custodian, Deacon Frank Powell, survived the storm while sleeping in the basement. Services resumed at the Fraser Street location while repairs were underway. Dr. Carl H. Moncrieff, Sr. became pastor of Bethlehem Church in 1977. He has served for 38 years. His visionary leadership has been instrumental in implementing administrative processes, retiring the mortgage, beautifying the building, and installing an elevator. Located in southwest Atlanta, Georgia, Bethlehem Church continues to serve its community. Its members strive to understand the teachings of Jesus Christ under the guidance of Dr. Moncrieff. Bethlehem Baptist Church stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of its congregation, a vibrant community dedicated to spiritual growth and service.
