Could a church be built from recycled military huts? Right here in front of you stands the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, a testament to resourcefulness and faith. After World War II, building materials were scarce in Brisbane. The congregation faced a dilemma: how to build their place of worship with limited resources. The answer came from an unexpected source: military huts and the old Ekibin Hospital. Les Pinnow, a skilled builder and member of the congregation, had a vision. He saw the potential in these discarded materials. Under his leadership, the congregation rallied together, dismantling the huts and carefully transporting the timber and corrugated iron to this site. Bethlehem Lutheran Church, dedicated on 20 November 1949, stands as a symbol of their determination and ingenuity. It served as a beacon of faith for over three decades until 1982. While no longer a place of worship, its legacy of resilience lives on, reminding us that even in times of scarcity, faith and community can build something extraordinary.
