Remember the year 1867 as we stand before Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. This church has deep roots. It emerged during the Reconstruction period. Newly freed African Americans sought their own religious space. They left white churches to create this sanctuary.
Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church started as the “Colored Baptist Church.” That was its name on the deed. Members later chose “Bethesda.” They connected it to the healing pool in Biblical Jerusalem. In the mid-1980s, “Missionary” was added. This reflected its denominational ties.
Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church has a unique founding story. Rev. A. E. Clemmons from First Baptist Church and Rev. William Massey, a Black leader, joined forces. They led 450 people in establishing Bethesda. Massey later pastored churches in Waco and Austin. He then returned to Bethesda.
David Abner was another key founder of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. He was Harrison County treasurer. Abner also served in the Texas House. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1875. Andrew Gross was also a founder. His son Frederick became president of Houston College. Throughout history, Bethesda’s pastors and members gained prominence locally and beyond.
Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church played a role in founding Bishop College. It was an African-American Baptist institution in Marshall from 1881-1961.
The first Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church building was simple. It was a one-story wooden structure on this very site. That original structure was razed between 1897 and 1901. A larger brick church in Gothic style replaced it. Tragedy struck in 1953. That building burned down. A nearly identical structure was rebuilt.
In 2008, Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church earned recognition. It was added to the “Buard History Trail.” This trail honors Marshall’s historic African-American sites.
In 1866, Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church received support. First Baptist Church assisted in its founding. A wooden frame building was built on this site. In 1917, Bethesda constructed the first brick church for Black people in the area. Fire severely damaged it November 22, 1936. Dedicated members rebuilt it within a year. They incurred practically no new debt.
During the 1950s, an annex was added to Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. Neighboring houses were purchased. Renovations occurred in the 1990s. They improved the kitchen, fellowship hall, and offices. Space was cleared for expansion. A parking lot was added. In recent years, a rental property was remodeled for church activities. The Bethesda Life Center was completed. It features a large fellowship hall. It also has a commercial kitchen and library. Classrooms, a baptismal pool and modern restrooms are included. Closed-circuit television connects the fellowship hall, foyer, pastor’s office and kitchen. An elevator lift was installed. Beautiful administrative and pastoral offices enhance the space.
Bethesda Baptist Church, a sister church, was established in 1884. Twenty-three members came from a neighboring church. They started it in the Bethesda community near Durham, North Carolina. The church prioritized its support of missionary work all over the world. It supported it not only financially but also in sending people from its own congregation to the mission field to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Bethesda Baptist Church established two extensions of its ministries. These are Bethesda Christian Academy and Bethesda Childcare Center. Bethesda Christian Academy celebrated its 20th year of Christian Education in 2015.
As we conclude, consider Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church’s enduring legacy. From its humble beginnings to its present-day form, it stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and community.
