Hidden within Havertown, Pennsylvania, lies Bethesda Methodist Cemetery. It’s a quiet place, brimming with stories. Bethesda Methodist Church, established in 1831, was the first Methodist Episcopal church in Haverford Township. The church, built in the Gothic Revival style, served the community for over a century. The accompanying Bethesda Methodist Cemetery holds the remains of many early settlers, including Mrs. Lydia Delaney. She generously donated the land for both the church and cemetery. Even the driveway lane has a story. It was a gift from William Bittle and John Leedom. As the congregation grew, the original Bethesda Methodist Church building became too small. In 1942, the congregation moved to a new location, becoming Ebenezer Methodist Church at Eagle and Steel roads. The old church building was repurposed, becoming a Fellowship Lodge for the International Order of Odd Fellows. Bethesda Methodist Cemetery remains as a testament to the early Methodist community in Haverford Township. It’s a peaceful reminder of their faith and contributions to the area.
