Tucked away in Sunset Park, the Bethelship Norwegian United Methodist Church has a fascinating history. It’s more than just a building. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. The Bethelship Norwegian United Methodist Church began its journey in the mid-1800s as the Mariners’ Methodist Episcopal Church. Its first home, near the bustling docks, was a gift from Edwin Mead, a wealthy shipping merchant. He dedicated the building to the memory of his daughter, Julia. This brick and blue stone structure served as a beacon of faith for the maritime community. In 1891, the congregation moved to Carroll Gardens, taking over the former Carroll Park Methodist Episcopal Church. They officially became the Bethelship Norwegian M.E. Church. After six decades in Carroll Gardens, the church found its current home in Sunset Park in 1949. The Bethelship Norwegian United Methodist Church stands at the corner of 56th Street and Fourth Avenue. A new chapter began in 1957 with the installation of a M.P. Möller organ. This “Double Artiste” model, with its intricate pipework and resonant tones, filled the sanctuary with inspiring music. It continues to enrich the worship experience today. The Bethelship Norwegian United Methodist Church’s journey reflects the evolving landscape of Sunset Park. It serves as a reminder of the waves of immigrants who have shaped this vibrant neighborhood.
