Why did Bethel United Methodist Church in San Antonio remain a “free church”? This intriguing detail from the church’s history immediately caught my attention. Here we stand before Bethel United Methodist Church, a testament to faith and community service on San Antonio’s west side. The church has a rich history, going back over 160 years. Established in 1834, the land for Bethel United Methodist Church was donated under one specific condition: that it always remain a free church. This stipulation has been honored throughout its long history. The original structure, built with remarkable craftsmanship, stood virtually unchanged for over a century. In 1888, two towers with vestibules and a connecting gallery were added to Bethel United Methodist Church. Later renovations in 1967 brought a social hall, classrooms, a nursery, and offices. The United Methodist Women funded a pavilion in 1997. Further renovations in 2006 modernized the sanctuary, added a new social hall, and made the facilities handicapped accessible. Bethel United Methodist Church joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1893. It has served both as a standalone station church and as part of a multi-church network. Bethel United Methodist Church returned to its station church status in 1988. For 13 years, from 1988 to 2002, the church benefited from the leadership of a second-career student pastor. The growth of Bethel United Methodist Church allowed for the appointment of a full-time pastor in 2003. Today, Bethel United Methodist Church continues its mission of service. The church’s outreach programs support those in need and spread the Gospel message. The Bethel Senior Nutrition Center, housed in Owens Hall, provides daily meals, activities, and resources for seniors. Bethel United Methodist Church also offers vibrant music ministry with choirs for all ages. This includes a Bethel Choir, Children and Youth Choir, and a Men’s Choir. Sunday School begins at 9:30 am, followed by the main Worship service at 11:00 am. Wednesday Bible Study is held at 6:00 pm. Bethel United Methodist Church is led by Pastor Carolyn Pittman and Minister of Music Monica Moore. Their leadership reflects the church’s dedication to “Growing through Grace, Serving in Love”. The spirit of community and commitment to serving others shines brightly at Bethel United Methodist Church. It continues to be a beacon of faith and service in San Antonio.
