Bethel Temple Church

In the bustling heart of Harlem, a beacon of faith has shone for nearly a century. This is the story of Bethel Temple Church. Bethel Temple Church first opened its doors in October 1932. The church’s first home was at 126th Street and 8th Avenue. Bishop Ida Bell Robinson, the church’s founder, worked tirelessly to build a congregation. Through outreach and a powerful radio broadcast, Bishop Robinson and Bethel Temple Church became well-known. The church grew quickly. It needed several new locations to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. Upon Bishop Robinson’s passing in 1946, Elder James Bell took the helm. He and his wife, Agnes, led the church to its current location at 922 St. Nicholas Avenue in 1949. Remarkably, the mortgage was paid off just four years later. Elder Bell’s leadership was recognized in 1961 when he was consecrated to the Bishopric. He continued to lead Bethel Temple Church, becoming known for his dynamic preaching and radio ministry. In 1990, Bishop Joseph Bell succeeded his father. He introduced a new philosophy, “A loving, caring, sharing ministry”. This philosophy guided the church’s outreach programs. These programs included a soup kitchen, food pantry, clothing giveaways, and tutoring services. Bishop Joseph Bell appointed his son, Elder Joseph Bell Jr., as assistant pastor in 1994. Together, they established the Bethel Community Bible Institute and expanded the church’s ministries. Following his father’s passing in 2015, Pastor Joseph Bell Jr. became the interim pastor. He was officially installed as pastor in 2016. Pastor Bell continues to build upon his father’s legacy. He is focused on dynamic evangelism and outreach. His vision extends beyond the local community, aiming to impact lives worldwide. The Bethel Temple Church continues to be a testament to faith, resilience, and community service.
