Bethel Presbyterian Church’s story began with a small group. They gathered for worship in 1880. Mrs. Lucretia Johnson hosted them in her home. This vision took shape. It became official on November 23, 1884, as a chapel.
Bethel Presbyterian Church is transforming. A new generation of worshippers is welcome here. The church embraces new styles. It delivers its message in the name of Jesus Christ.
What does the African American Church look like after the COVID-19 pandemic? Bethel explores the connection. It studies the ties between economics, religion, and the legacy of the African American Church.
The church celebrated its 138th anniversary on December 11, 2022. Even after the passing of Pastor Minister Jonathan Williams due to Covid-19, the church continues. It stays on the path of righteousness. Its online ministry keeps Bethel Presbyterian Church very much alive.

Improvements at the back of Bethel Presbyterian Church give a fresh look and feel. It hosted a birthday party each month. Members with birthdays in that month are celebrated.
Bethel Presbyterian Church had an excellent trip. They saw Aurelia perform in “Once On This Island”. She is the daughter of one of their members. She played Asaka in the Broadway Musical. The performance was excellent. All of the actors and actresses were phenomenal.

Bethel Mission Chapel was reorganized. This happened in 1887. It was in a new building. The old building was moved one mile away. It became Hope Chapel. Bethel Chapel functioned until 1943. It then became Bethel Presbyterian Church. Rev. Leslie Taylor led the ministry.
From Bethel Presbyterian Church of Plainfield NJ, we honor the lives of Lucretia Johnson. She was the founder. We honor Pastors Rev. Imes and Rev. Taylor. Also honored are Rev. Christian and Rev. Newbold Leader. The church remembers Fred Johnson, Rufus Dent, and Mosel Lee. John Hawks Sr., Marietta Onque, Dorothy Horne, Gloria Jennings, and Sarah Atkinson are also remembered. To them we say Ashe.
