Bethel Gospel Assembly’s story began not within its walls, but in the heart of a young German woman named Lillian Kraeger. In 1915, two African American girls, Mae Allison and another whose name has been lost to time, found faith but were denied membership in a downtown church due to their race. Lillian, heartbroken, wouldn’t let their newfound faith falter. She journeyed to Harlem, starting cottage meetings in their homes. These humble gatherings blossomed into a congregation, a testament to Lillian’s unwavering belief. This act of devotion came at a steep price. Her family and fiancé turned away, unable to accept her ministry to the African American community. Yet, Lillian persisted. In the spring of 1917, the small group experienced a Pentecostal revival, and were baptized in the Holy Spirit. In November of that year, they formally organized as Bethel Mission. Bethel Gospel Assembly, as it’s known today, thrives under the leadership of Bishop Carlton Brown. It serves a congregation of approximately 1,200 members and provides vital services to roughly 1,500 individuals in the Harlem community monthly. From its humble beginnings in cottage meetings to its current standing as a pillar of the community, Bethel Gospel Assembly’s journey mirrors the resilience of the Harlem community itself.
