Eight families. A vision. That’s the seed from which Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church sprang in 1962. Right here in Houston, these families envisioned a church with a threefold mission. Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church has grown significantly since its humble beginnings with those eight families. Yet the original vision continues to guide the church. The church’s first pastor, Philip Blair Jones, served only briefly from April to September 1962. Then came Dr. Edwin A. Blum, who led the congregation from 1963 to 1971. Dr. Robert A. Tolson followed, serving a remarkable thirty-one years, from 1971 to 2002. Dr. Michael Boys continued the legacy from 2002 to 2011. Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church remains a vibrant community. It strives to fulfill its founding mission. It continues to evolve and grow, impacting Houston for Christ.
