Did you know that Bethel Christian Reformed Church started with only 23 members? Gathered in the Glendale YMCA on June 7, 1931, they began a journey of faith. Home Missionary Rev. Henry De Vries guided them. The Los Angeles Christian Reformed Church consistory supervised.
In January 1932, Mr. Caspar Van Dyk arrived. He was a ministry candidate who pastored the Glendale group. Soon, a Ladies Circle formed. A Men’s Society and Sunday School were also organized. Morning and evening services became regular events. On March 28, 1932, the Glendale Christian Reformed Church officially organized. It had nine families and five individuals as charter members.
From 1936 to 1938, Mr. Walter Hekman and Mr. Christian Ter Maat served. They were both ministry candidates. During those years, services took place at the Jewel City Funeral Chapel in Glendale. Today, Bethel Christian Reformed Church stands as a welcoming church. It is in the heart of the San Fernando Valley.
Bethel focuses on experiencing life’s abundance. They share the fullness of life with everyone. They believe Jesus freely gives this life to all who believe in Him. The members seek to know Jesus more deeply. They study the Bible. They talk with God through prayer and worship. Loving God and their neighbors is central to their mission. They learn to serve each other. Day by day, they humbly bow to God’s will. This shapes their work, home life, school, and their entire lives.
Bethel is a diverse multicultural congregation. Members come from all over the world. The church sponsors a community center. It also supports a program that helps young people enter college. The church strives to be witnesses of His grace. They are empowered by the Holy Spirit. They aim to be actively hospitable. Bethel is reformed and biblical.
The church embraces cultural and generational diversity. They are united in Christ Jesus. Bethel is multicultural and multi-age in worship. This extends to leadership and communication. The congregation is intentional. They respond with gratitude to God. This shows through compassion, service, and stewardship. Bethel aims to nurture everyone. They are open to everyone’s spiritual gifts. They uphold everything in prayer. They are servants to one another and their community.
Services are held in English with Spanish translation. The approximate attendance is 65 people. The church has a membership of 114. Bethel Christian Reformed Church continues to evolve. It remains a vibrant center of faith. It serves its diverse community with love and dedication.
