Founded in 1912 Bethel Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Initially known as Elm Baptist Church it was organized in the home of Reverend Charles Johnson. The church was incorporated in 1915. Its name later changed to Bethel Baptist Church. The congregation moved to 157 Standwood Street under Pastor Murray. Today Bethel Baptist Church Ministries of Roxbury Inc. thrives at its current location 18 Saint James Street.
For over a century Bethel Baptist Church has served its community. Six pastors and one interim pastor have guided the congregation. Reverend Franklin Murray Sr. has been the pastor for an impressive 36 years. He is a native of Charleston South Carolina. He previously served at Morning Star Baptist Church. Pastor Murray’s dedication is evident in the many ministries started under his leadership. He’s a devoted family man too. He’s been married to First Lady Deaconess Essie Murray for 61 years. They have five living children. He remains deeply involved in his family and the Bethel community.
