What did it take to build a place of worship and see it thrive for over a century? Right here before you stands the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Its story is one of faith, perseverance, and community. A small group of devout individuals from St. James A.M.E. Church envisioned a new spiritual home on the East Side of San Antonio. In 1889, they erected a modest frame church, a testament to their dedication. However, their aspirations went beyond this initial structure.

Their vision materialized in 1915 with the laying of the cornerstone for a new church at this very location. It took five years for the community to raise the $3,000 needed to construct the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. This building stands as a symbol of their collective effort and a beacon of hope for generations to come. The church’s impact extended beyond its walls. Over the decades, numerous groups formed within the church, each dedicated to enriching the spiritual lives of its members and the wider community. From the Annie E. Hunt WMS established in 1911 to the Sons of Allen formed in 1987, these groups nurtured a spirit of service and camaraderie.

The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church has thrived thanks to the guidance of numerous devoted pastors. Their leadership nurtured the congregation’s faith and steered it through the changing tides of time. The church’s story is intricately woven into the fabric of San Antonio, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the profound impact of community.
