In 1888 a vision took root. A small group from Immanuel Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church desired to share their faith. They began their ministry in a Brooklyn carpenter’s shop. This humble beginning marked the birth of Bethany United Methodist Church.
Bethany United Methodist Church wasn’t always located at 1208 St Johns Place. Initially it operated as a Sunday school class at 1635 Atlantic Avenue. Later they purchased a building for $7500. This move marked a significant step for the growing congregation. By 1889 attendance included 15 adults and 25 children.
The church’s first sermon was delivered by Rev Charles F Thornblade on September 1 1889. He based it on Romans 1:16. This verse emphasizes the power of the Gospel. The church remained true to this core message. They focused on sharing the Gospel making disciples.
In 1891 the congregation officially became the Swedish Bethany Methodist Episcopal Church. It had 78 full members and 30 probationary members. As the Swedish population shifted east the church moved to Crown Heights. They purchased land in 1914. Groundbreaking for the current building occurred in 1915. The dedication followed that same year.
The church celebrated its 100th anniversary at this location in 2015. A momentous occasion marking its long history. In 1968 a merger with the Evangelical United Brethren Church occurred. This changed the name to Bethany United Methodist Church. The church’s mission has endured. It continues to serve the community. It welcomes people from all backgrounds. Bethany United Methodist Church remains a beacon of faith. It continues to fulfill its founding vision spreading the message of Christ.
