A consecrated servant of the Lord. That’s how it all began for Bethany Fellowship Church. Mabel Weaver built Peace Chapel in 1904-05. It stood at the corner of Springfield and Armory Streets in Springfield. It wasn’t just any chapel. It was interdenominational a place of worship for everyone. Rev A B Simpson even dedicated it.
Bethany Fellowship Church wasn’t always in Houston. Its roots trace back to that small chapel. In 1919 it became affiliated with the Assemblies of God. Many preachers served there in those early years. The church’s influence spread far and wide.
In 1924 it was incorporated as Bethany Pentecostal Church. It continued to grow. In 1954 its name changed to Bethany Assembly of God. This reflected its denominational ties. Over the years the church in Springfield expanded. They had at least three building projects. Seating capacity grew from just 120 to an impressive 560. That shows remarkable growth.
But growth meant needing more space. The congregation decided to move. On May 12 1976 they purchased 51 acres. That’s where Bethany Fellowship Church now stands. Construction began on November 8 1980. The cornerstone was laid on November 6 1982. Easter Sunday April 3 1983 saw the first service. The dedication followed on May 29 1983.
Even in its new location Bethany Fellowship Church continued to grow. Another building project followed. This time it focused on youth and children. It included an auditorium nursery and classrooms. Ground was broken March 16 1997. The addition was dedicated on Easter Sunday April 12 1998.
From a small interdenominational chapel to a large church in Houston Bethany Fellowship’s journey is impressive. Its history reflects unwavering faith. It is a testament to God’s work. It demonstrates the power of community and expansion. The church’s ongoing ministry continues to serve the community and spread God’s word.
