Founded in 1958 Bethany Baptist Church of West Los Angeles has a rich history. Rev Rocellia Johnson a visionary leader established the church. He had arrived in Los Angeles in 1941. His impact extended far beyond the church walls. He also founded Bethany Christian Bible College in 1978. He served for 27 years as executive director of the National Evangelism Movement. Thousands accepted Christ through his ministry.

The church’s beginnings were humble. The first service was held in the home of Sis Vernice Moore. Sis Annie V Dawson and Deacon Kelly Bollin also attended. The first offering totaled $21.50. The dedicated group worshipped from house to house.

In September 1958 the church found its first permanent home. They called it Little Bethany. It was located on the corner of 5th Avenue and 15th Street. The church continued to grow. Pastor Johnson had a new vision in 1970. The church relocated to 4300 W Santa Barbara Avenue. It is now located at the corner of Hillcrest and MLK Blvd.

Bethany Baptist Church is known for its community outreach. They held a Thankful Thursday Giveaway. Over 700 families received groceries. The church also established an evangelism department. This department organized workshops across the country Canada and Trinidad.

In 1981 Sis Dorothy Johnson became the prayer coordinator. She diligently served until her death in 2008. She coordinated a 6 AM prayer hour every Wednesday morning. Pastor Johnson organized a 24-hour gospel service. This was a unique approach to evangelism. It addressed the challenges of time constraints and financial demands for many potential churchgoers.

A major setback struck in 1994. The Northridge earthquake destroyed the church building. The congregation faced a nomadic period for 13 years. They held services at Dorsey High School and Audubon Middle School. Bethany’s office staff worked from Pastor and Sis Johnson’s home and later from Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. The church found strength in community. They held communion services with Mt Gilead Baptist Church for 11 years.

Bethany Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. Its legacy continues to inspire many. The church’s commitment to evangelism community outreach and education is remarkable. It demonstrates the enduring power of faith and its impact on countless lives.
