Perhaps you’ve passed by this building many times without realizing its deep roots. Welcome to Bethany Assembly of God Church. It is more than just a building. It is a story of faith, growth, and community.
Bethany Assembly of God Church’s story began far from San Diego. Its origins trace back to 1904 in Springfield. Mabel Weaver. She was a dedicated servant of the Lord. She built Peace Chapel. It stood at the corner of Springfield and Armory Streets. Rev. A. B. Simpson dedicated it to the Lord’s work. He was the founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. This interdenominational beginning set the stage for the church’s global influence.
In 1919, Bethany Fellowship Chapel affiliated with the Assemblies of God. It was part of the New England District. A succession of preachers ministered in the Chapel during those early years. In 1924, the church incorporated. It became Bethany Pentecostal Church. The church’s ministry continued to greatly influence the community. In 1954, the church changed its name. It became Bethany Assembly of God. This conformed to the denominational name.
Under divine guidance and the Holy Spirit’s influence Bethany Assembly of God Church experienced spiritual and physical growth. In Springfield, the church undertook three major building programs. These expansions increased seating capacity from 120 to 560.
As Bethany Assembly of God Church sought to fulfill its mission, it focused on ministering to the Lord. They also ministered to the church and the world. The church’s growth and ministry necessitated a significant decision. They needed to make room for God to do more through this body of believers.
On May 12, 1976, the congregation voted to purchase fifty-one acres. This is where they are located now. Ground was broken on November 8, 1980. The cornerstone was laid on November 6, 1982. The first service was held on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1983. It was dedicated to God’s glory on May 29, 1983.
Continued growth led to a second building project. This facility focused on the needs of youth and children. It provided them with an auditorium, nursery, and classrooms. Ground was broken on March 16, 1997. The addition was dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1998. It was for the furtherance of the Kingdom.
