In 1962, Bethany Apostolic Church welcomed a dynamic new leader, Elder Robert W. McMurray. McMurray, a former entertainer who had shared stages with the likes of Frank Sinatra and Martha Raye, brought a unique charisma to Bethany Apostolic Church. His powerful preaching, combined with his quick wit and rhythmic delivery, resonated with the community. Under his leadership, Bethany Apostolic Church saw its attendance quadruple. McMurray, recognizing the church’s growing role in the community, changed its name to Greater Bethany Community Church. This reflected his vision for an expanding and inclusive congregation. His dedication extended beyond the church walls. McMurray established the Greater Bethany Economic Development Corporation to address community needs. He worked to develop affordable housing, support small businesses, and combat gang activity. He even opened the church doors to political candidates, providing a platform to connect with and address the concerns of the residents of South-Central Los Angeles. McMurray’s leadership and community involvement earned him recognition as “God’s Man of Action” by his congregation. He was later conferred the title of Bishop in 1973, further solidifying his influence within the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. His impact at Bethany Apostolic Church, later Greater Bethany Community Church, left an indelible mark on the community, demonstrating the power of faith and community engagement.
