Time to step back to 1864. That’s when German immigrants arrived and named this area Bethanien. Now, we stand before Bethania Lutheran Church. It’s not just a building. It is a testament to faith. It’s a symbol of community.

Bethania Lutheran Church is the oldest Lutheran church in Queensland. It was built in 1872. The church replaced an earlier slab church.

German immigrants on the ship Susannah Godeffroy built the first church. They settled here and called the place Bethanien. The graveyard has graves dating back to 1866.

In 1875, the railway line was built very close to the church. It even passed over the site of the earlier building.

Look at the handmade bricks. See the timber and shingles. The materials were sourced locally. This shows the pioneers’ resourcefulness.

Originally the church had a shingle roof. But it was replaced with iron in 1907. The new pulpit was built in 1926.

Major renovations occurred in 1972. This was for the centenary celebrations. A new iron roof was installed. A plywood ceiling and new lighting were added. Leadlight windows sparkle inside.

Notice the exterior plaster. It is raked to suggest stone construction. The brick walls are strengthened with brick piers. They are visible outside.

Opposite the entry is the original timber bell tower. It stands as a reminder of the past. The Beenleigh railway line runs close by. A timber footbridge provides pedestrian access. Some graves predate the railway line. They still exist in front of the church. The cemetery is now at the rear.

Inside, the nave has a rectangular shape. There are square projections at both ends. Gable roofs cover the projecting rooms. They are lower than the nave roof.

At the eastern end, a concrete block entry vestibule was added in 1972. It replaced a timber entry porch. The original entry doors are gone.

The pulpit is located at the western end. It is built as a balcony above the altar. This arrangement is original.

Above the original entry, a timber mezzanine exists. It has been extended. A steep timber staircase leads to it. The raked ceiling has plywood lining. Steel tie rods connect the roof structure.

Tall pointed arched windows line the side walls. Stained glass hopper windows replaced the original windows in 1972. Small pointed arched windows grace the end walls and vestibules.

Bethania Lutheran Church has seen changes. Some fabric has been replaced. But the original forms have been maintained.

Bethania Lutheran Church is more than bricks and mortar. It is a welcoming Christian church. It shares God’s grace, love, and hope. The congregation has strong ties with the Bethania Lutheran School. They work together for the benefit of the students. The school staff and community are covered in prayer each week.

Services are held every Sunday at 9:00 am. The Bethania Lutheran Action Youth Zone invites students from Years 5 and 6. They meet on alternate Friday afternoons.

Bethania Lutheran Church is a testament to faith. It is a symbol of community. It stands as a reminder of the past and a beacon for the future. Its story is etched in every brick. It is sung in every hymn. It is whispered in every prayer. It is a living legacy.
