Established in 1957 Beth Torah stands as a testament to the growing Syrian Sephardic Jewish community in Brooklyn. This magnificent building at 1061 Ocean Parkway wasn’t completed until 1969. It became a spiritual home for nearly 600 families. Beth Torah’s architecture even received acclaim. The structure’s timeless design continues to impress congregants.
Beth Torah thrived under Rabbi Z Lieberman’s guidance. Early leaders like Hazzan Isaac Cabasso helped build the congregation. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Beth Torah expanded its services. They added an early minyan a youth minyan and a young adult minyan. The 1990s saw another growth spurt. World-renowned Hazzan Yehezqel Zion joined Beth Torah. They also acquired the Club 1000 building on Ocean Parkway and Avenue K. A new fathers and sons program was launched. Today Rabbi Yehuda Ari Azancot leads the congregation.
Beth Torah expanded in 2004. This was partly due to a growing youth population. Hundreds of children teens and young adults attend weekly. The expansion involved adding an extension to the north side.
Beth Torah is a significant community institution. It hosts services community events and fundraisers. Dozens of catered events occur each year. Nine weekly Shabbat minyanim draw over 1000 worshippers. Programs cater to children as young as four. Beth Torah uniquely balances tradition and history with youth growth and community engagement. Families spanning four or even five generations participate together. Beth Torah’s elegantly renovated social hall is a premier venue for weddings and simchas. The breathtaking sanctuary and delicious Ashkenazi and Sephardic cuisine are popular attractions.
