Hidden behind a wall and gate on bustling Pollock Street, Beth-el Synagogue stands as a silent witness to Kolkata’s rich history. Beth-el Synagogue isn’t just a building. It’s a story. A story woven with threads of faith, community, and resilience. Constructed in 1856, Beth-el Synagogue, meaning “House of God” in Hebrew, served the Baghdadi Jewish community. The synagogue’s creation was made possible by the generosity of David Joseph Ezra and Ezekiel Judah. They were two prominent members of the local Baghdadi Jewish community. Later, in 1885, Elias Shalom Gubbay funded further improvements. The growing congregation needed more space. Beth-el Synagogue’s architecture is a fascinating blend of Western influences. The facade, painted a pale yellow, features rounded arched openings and pointed-arched stained glass windows. The Star of David and menorah appliques clearly mark its Jewish identity. Inside, the sanctuary is a grand space. Soaring columns, painted white with blue accents, support the women’s gallery above. The tebah, the raised platform for Torah readings, sits at the center. Sunlight streams through stained glass windows. It illuminates the marble floor tiles and the ornate heckal, the ark where the Torah scrolls are kept. This heckal is no ordinary cabinet. It’s a walk-in room, once home to over one hundred Torah scrolls. The dwindling Jewish community has meant fewer scrolls remain. Many have followed the community members to new homes around the world. Beth-el Synagogue has seen its share of celebrations. Grand anniversaries filled the sanctuary with congregants and guests. However, political and social shifts in India led to a decline in the Jewish community. Today, only a handful of Jews remain in Kolkata. Regular services have ceased. Yet, a lamp is still lit every Sabbath, a beacon of enduring faith. Beth-el Synagogue stands as a testament to a vibrant past and a poignant present. Muslim caretakers now watch over this historic building. They recognize its significance. It is a piece of Kolkata’s diverse tapestry, a quiet reminder of a community that once thrived within these walls.
