Hear the resonant chime of eleven bells. This is Beth Eden Baptist Church in Waltham Massachusetts. Founded October 10 1887 fifty-three members established this church. They sought a Baptist presence on Waltham’s South Side. Beth Eden Baptist Church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community.

The church’s history is rich. It’s a beautiful example of Romanesque Revival architecture. Built in 1891 it stands as the oldest church on Waltham’s South Side. Construction wasn’t without its challenges. Initially there was little local enthusiasm for a town clock in the tower. Funding was initially insufficient. However the community rallied. A clock from the Seth Thomas Clock Company in Boston was installed. The city of Waltham recognizing its significance later purchased the clock.

The church bells a gift from Deacon George Hudson deserve special mention. Eleven bells each inscribed for a family member were installed in 1916. Their midnight peal ushered in 1917 a moment of community celebration. The bells played a significant role during the Iran hostage crisis. Lillian Shirley rang them daily for 444 days. President Carter even acknowledged this act of faith. A plaque at the entrance commemorates this.

The church building faced adversity. A major fire in 1908 devastated the structure. However it was rebuilt largely following the original plan expanding organ space. Today Beth Eden Baptist Church continues its mission. It remains a vital part of the Waltham community. It offers Sunday services communion and various events.

So stand here and reflect on Beth Eden Baptist Church. A place of worship a landmark a symbol of enduring faith in the heart of Waltham. Let the history resonate with you. Let the spirit of this place inspire you.
