“Besteiros” might sound like a simple place name now. But imagine its people defending their land. Besteiros, a former civil parish in Paredes, holds stories of community and change.

Besteiros was once a distinct parish. It merged into Paredes in 2013. This small area tells a big tale of Portuguese life. In 2011, 1448 people called Besteiros home. They lived within 2.13 square kilometers.

The parish of Besteiros disappeared due to administrative reorganization in 2012 and 2013. Its territory joined the parish of Paredes.

Historically, Besteiros was agricultural. Its residents lived off the land. They practiced subsistence farming. Over time, things changed. People began working in nearby cities. Besteiros became more of a residential area.

But Besteiros also played a military role. The “besteiros do conto” were crossbowmen. This was a unique Portuguese military group. They were crucial in battles for the Crown. King Denis created this militia in 1299. They recruited craftsmen and people with crossbow skills. They were an elite force of about 5,000 fighters. They were spread across 300 units.

These crossbowmen served the monarch. They had their own commander-in-chief. Municipal authorities chose an anadel in each municipality. These crossbowmen had to train. They had to maintain their weapons. They needed specific ammunition amounts. This kept them ready for battle.

Besteiros has its own cultural heritage. The Capela de S. Domingos is a landmark. Also there is a 17th-century church. The Igreja Paroquial is also important.

The people of Besteiros celebrate several festivals. S.Cosme and S.Damião are honored. The celebrations occur on the second weekend of September.

Several community groups thrive in Besteiros. The Associação Desportiva Recreativa Cultural e Social de Besteiros unites locals. The Grupo Jovem de Besteiros is a youth organization. The Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Freguesia de Besteiros promotes local progress.

Besteiros faced population changes over the years. The population evolved during the 20th century. In 1911, it even included the parish of Cristelo. Cristelo became separate in 1916. In 2001, the younger population was significant. But by 2011, the numbers shifted. There was a notable change in age demographics.

So, remember Besteiros. It is more than just a former parish. It is a place of agriculture, faith, and community. It is a place where crossbowmen once defended Portugal.
