“Berti” they call it. A nickname whispered among Freiburgians. But don’t expect a classic fountain. This is Bertoldsbrunnen a monument unlike any other.

Right here in the heart of Freiburg stands Bertoldsbrunnen. It’s more than just a pretty water feature. It’s a living testament to Freiburg’s history. It’s a story etched in stone and bronze.

Bertoldsbrunnen’s story begins not with this sculpture. It began much earlier in 1807. A fountain was built then. It honored Prince-Elector Karl Friedrich von Baden. Karl Friedrich became Grand Duke. Freiburg swore allegiance to him in 1806. The fountain was more than just a tribute. It celebrated Duke Berthold III. He founded Freiburg. Latin inscriptions on the original fountain detailed this history. They spoke of Freiburg’s founders and its loyalty.

Tragedy struck in 1944. Bombers destroyed the original Bertoldsbrunnen. World War II left its mark. A new Bertoldsbrunnen had to be created.

The curatorship of Bertoldsbrunnen chose Nikolaus Röslmeir’s design. It was unconventional. It was a limestone pedestal in a shallow basin. An abstract equestrian statue sits atop the pedestal. The design was inspired by Gothic arches. It connects Bertoldsbrunnen to the Freiburg Minster. The pedestal proclaims “For the Dukes of Zähringen founders and men of Freiburg im Breisgau”. This is a proud statement.

The public’s reaction was mixed. People found the bronze knight too abstract. In 1972 the fountain moved. It found its present location. The basin was redesigned.

Today Bertoldsbrunnen stands proudly. It’s a central meeting point. It’s a place where history and modern life intertwine. This abstract monument is a fitting tribute. It honors Freiburg’s rich and often turbulent past. It’s a reminder of the city’s resilience. Take a moment. Reflect on the layers of history beneath your feet. Each stone whispers of the past. This fountain is far more than a pretty sight. It is the heart of Freiburg. A lasting testament to Berthold III and his legacy.
