That incredible aroma wafting from Bertha’s Kitchen is more than just food it’s a story. A story of family tradition and Southern soul. Right here on Meeting Street Road in North Charleston stands Bertha’s Kitchen a true American classic.

Founded in 1979 by Albertha Grant this unassuming restaurant is a family affair. Her son bought a small motel and suggested she start a restaurant within it. The result was Bertha’s Kitchen a place where generations have gathered to savor homestyle Southern cooking. The walls are adorned with family portraits painted by a local muralist a personal touch that warms the heart.

The menu is a celebration of Gullah cuisine. Fried chicken pork chops and whiting are iconic dishes. Red rice stewed chicken neck with gizzards lima beans collard greens macaroni and cheese and cornbread complete the feast. Travel + Leisure even named the gumbo soup a must-try. Many rave about the fried chicken. The lima beans also receive special praise.

Bertha passed away in 2007 but her legacy lives on. Her daughters Julia Grant Linda Pinckney and Sharon Coakley carried the torch. They kept the restaurant running until 2022. Then they decided to put the building up for sale due to pandemic related staffing issues. They hope to move to a smaller location.

In 2017 Bertha’s Kitchen received well-deserved recognition. The James Beard Foundation named it one of America’s Classics. This award celebrates restaurants with timeless appeal loved for quality food reflecting their community’s character. Bertha’s Kitchen embodies that spirit. It’s a place where everyone is welcome a place where good food and good company create lasting memories. So step inside Bertha’s Kitchen and experience a taste of history a taste of family a taste of home.
