Established in 1961 the Bertha-Krupp-Schule stands proudly in Essen. This isn’t just any school. It’s a testament to the Krupp family’s legacy. The land was generously donated by Friedrich Krupp AG. The school is named after Bertha Krupp. She was the eldest daughter of Friedrich Alfred Krupp and Margarethe. Bertha inherited the Krupp empire. She married Gustav von Bohlen und Halbach. He later became chairman of the supervisory board of Friedrich Krupp AG. Their son Alfried Krupp was born in 1907.

The Bertha-Krupp-Schule has a rich history. Long before the current building a school existed on this very spot. Records show a school here as early as 1685. This original school was established with the support of Anna Salome von Salm-Reifferscheidt. The school served three villages Frohnhausen Altendorf and Holsterhausen. It was the only school for these rural communities. The building eventually fell into disrepair. A new school was built in 1813. This was near the current Alfred-Krupp-Gymnasium.

But the Bertha-Krupp-Schule we see today is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of learning and innovation. In 1991 the school started offering bilingual education in English. This commitment to international education led to its certification as a Europaschule in 2007. The school continues to embrace international partnerships through the Erasmus+ program. Students have the opportunity to participate in exchange programs with schools in Spain France and Sweden.

Beyond academics the Bertha-Krupp-Schule is deeply invested in its community. It provides afternoon care for students in grades 5 and 6. This collaboration with the Arbeiter-Samariter-Jugend Ruhr includes homework support and meals. The school has undergone significant renovations. This includes a complete facade renovation in 2012. The sports hall was also completely refurbished. A new building with four classrooms was added to accommodate growing student numbers. The Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung also supports the school. The foundation provides students with four-week internships abroad.

So as you stand before the Bertha-Krupp-Schule remember more than just its academic excellence. Remember its long history. Remember the Krupp family’s contribution. Remember the dedication to both local and global education. Remember this is more than just a school. It’s a living legacy.
