A plaque. A simple plaque. Yet it whispers a monumental story. This Bernhard Weiss Plaque stands as a testament to a man who dared to stand against the tide of hate. It marks the Berlin home of a remarkable individual a lawyer a police official and a steadfast defender of democracy in the tumultuous Weimar Republic.

Bernhard Weiss wasn’t just any lawyer. He was born into a prominent Jewish family in Berlin. He excelled. He earned a doctorate of law. He served as a reserve officer in the Bavarian Army during World War I earning the Iron Cross. He was a man of many achievements. He was also the first Jew to enter the civil service of pre-Weimar Germany.

His rise through the ranks of the Berlin police was meteoric. He became Deputy Chief of the Berlin Criminal Police. He later became its chief and eventually Vice President of the entire Berlin police force. This wasn’t just a job. It was a battlefield. Weiss was a key player in the political tensions of the Weimar Republic. He relentlessly fought extremists on both the left and right. He fiercely defended parliamentary democracy. He worked tirelessly to make the Kripo a bulwark against those who threatened the republic.

Weiss was instrumental in bringing Rathenau’s murderers to justice. He confiscated weapons from Nazi and communist meetings. He even shut down the Berlin branch of the Nazi party. He arrested hundreds of its members. He stood up to Joseph Goebbels repeatedly. Goebbels the future Reich Minister of Propaganda relentlessly vilified Weiss. He called Weiss Isidore and the Weimar Republic the Jew’s Republic. Weiss wasn’t intimidated. He sued Goebbels over and over. He won most of the lawsuits. Weiss also blocked Goebbels from speaking at Nazi rallies.

His bravery was short-lived. After the Preussenschlag in 1932 Weiss lost his position. He faced arrest. A short-lived imprisonment followed. He fled Germany. He escaped just days before Hitler became Chancellor. The Gestapo hunted him. His colleagues helped him escape to Czechoslovakia. He eventually found refuge in the United Kingdom where he opened a business.

This plaque isn’t just a marker on a building. It’s a monument to courage. To resilience. To a man who fought for democracy even when it cost him everything. It’s a reminder of the importance of standing up against injustice. It is a story of a man who lived and died by his values. A man who won the respect of many. He was a man who deserves to be remembered. His story lives on. It lives on here. At this Bernhard Weiss Plaque.
