Have you ever heard about the Signal de Bernex? It is a hill, the second highest point of the Geneva canton. The hill serves as a silent sentinel, overlooking the charming town of Bernex. Imagine yourself strolling through the cobblestone streets of this peaceful village, surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills. This is Bernex, a well-kept secret tucked away in the Swiss countryside, just a short distance from the bustling metropolis of Geneva.
This tranquil municipality holds a rich history dating back to 1256 when it was first mentioned as Brenay. While it may not have the allure of a major city, its humble beginnings have shaped the village into the charming community it is today. It was in 1793 that the municipality of Bernex-Onex-Confignon was created. This new community was formed by the merging of three villages, uniting their resources and sharing their heritage. However, in 1850, Bernex decided to go its own way from the other two, leading to the independent municipality of Bernex.
Life in Bernex is peaceful, with a focus on rural living. The village is dotted with traditional farms and vineyards, showcasing the area’s agricultural heritage. It boasts seven villages – Bernex, Chèvres, Loëx, Lully, Cressy, Challoux, and Sézenove – each having its own distinct character and charm. The coat of arms of Bernex symbolizes these villages with its seven flames of fire, which burn at the top of the Signal de Bernex.
Bernex is a delightful reminder that true beauty can be found in the simplest of places. It is a haven of tranquillity, where life unfolds at a slower pace. Its history, its community, and its natural beauty all come together to create a truly special destination.
