Bernardo Mountain is located in North San Diego County. It’s a must-visit for those seeking natural beauty and a good workout. The Bernardo Mountain summit trail is part of the San Dieguito River Park. This park protects the San Dieguito River watershed.
Our journey to the top of Bernardo Mountain begins! The most popular route covers about 7.25 miles. This out-and-back trail involves a 1000-foot climb. The trailhead is conveniently located near the I-15 in Escondido.
We’ll start at the parking lot off Via Rancho Parkway. It’s just behind the driving range and Sikes Adobe Farmhouse. The initial path follows the Coast to Crest Trail. When complete, this trail will stretch 71 miles. It will go all the way from Julian to Del Mar.
Be mindful of bikers. The paved section is popular with them. Soon, we’ll pass under the freeway. Then we head into the park along Lake Hodges’ lakebed. This is often dry.
Interpretive signs dot the path. The David Kreitzer bicycle/pedestrian bridge is nearby. Soon we will see the shimmering lake water. We’re moving northwest toward the Bernardo Mountain Summit Trail. The signs clearly mark the way.
Enjoy a brief respite in a shaded canyon. We’ll cross a charming footbridge over Felicita Creek. Vibrant green riparian flora surrounds us.
At the 1.75-mile mark, we leave the Coast to Crest Trail. We take a right onto the summit trail. Ignore the next trail on the right. Continue up the rocky path. It wraps around Bernardo Mountain.
Expansive views unfold. We’ll see surrounding chaparral scenery. Luxurious homes dot the landscape. Ignore a spur trail at 2.5 miles. Continue south as the ascent steepens. We hug a fence and water tower. We are nearing the park’s apex. Some hikers throw rocks at the water tank to hear the satisfying sound. I do not recommend throwing rocks at large water-containing structures.
Push through the final switchback. At about 3.6 miles, we reach Bernardo Mountain’s boulder-lined peak. Many spots invite us to sit. We can enjoy a picnic. We can bask in hiking glory.
